Learning How to Manage Your Time with Online Classes

Believe it or not, it is possible to work full-time, have a family and/or social life, and take online classes at night.  It does take organization, scheduling, time management, patience and understanding from those around you, but with the right mindset it’s accomplishable.  Having the right set of tools will help you when it comes to managing your time with online classes.

Set Goals and Write Lists

There are several tips for using your time more effectively.  Establishing attainable goals is one tip that is often useful.  Once you set several goals for yourself, and even create deadlines, it will hopefully keep you from procrastinating.  Both short-term and long-term goals are included.  For instance, you may set a long-term goal of having a 4.0 average when you finish your online program, but in order to do that, you must also set short-term goals of studying for exams, and sending in work on time.  The best way to set your goals is by writing them down.  Once they are written, it feels almost permanent, and accomplishing them will be something you want to do, rather than something you have to do.  Not only is it a good idea to make a list when it comes to your goals, but making lists in terms of tasks that need to be completed will be very helpful.  Similar to a grocery list, writing a daily list of what needs to be taken care of will be a helpful reminder, and once you finish it, you can cross it off and watch the list diminish.

Note Taking and Reviewing

A great way to help in time management in taking notes while you study, read, or going over a lesson for the first time.  If you take notes while you are learning, it will help you in retaining information.  In addition, later on, when you are looking for certain facts, having it written in a notebook makes it easier to find than having to go find it in a book or lengthy paragraph.  Then, when it comes to studying for exams, it makes it easier to study and review from your own notes, whether they be typed or handwritten, rather than going to the original source.  When you take notes on your own, you learn to take out the important information that you are most likely going to see on an exam.

Miscellaneous

A few other ways to manage your time effectively are through sleep, and learning to handle distractions.  Although 8 hours of sleep sounds almost impossible, it’s important in order to properly function – your brain and body both need that daily rest.  Napping is the worst idea for students, because you’re very likely to wake up even more tired, and the lack of sleep makes it harder in completing tasks.  In addition, it’s also a bad idea to study or work from bed, or your bedroom – it will only make you more tired, and make it harder for you to fall asleep at night because you’ve been in bed all day doing homework.  Lastly, learning how to avoid distraction will help in time management.  Distractions are everywhere, coming from people, sounds, technology, etc.  Learning how to stay focused and avoid different distractions will give you more time to complete tasks and be more productive.
