5 Habits of a Successful Online College Student

Receiving a degree from an online college, at any level (Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate), is not an easy task. The hours and concentration that need to be put into your studies are significant and should not be taken lightly. Not only do the courses provide challenging questions, the process of managing your degree by scheduling your classes and curriculum can be difficult as well. All of the problems encountered, however, should all be worth it in the end. According to the United States’ Bureau of Labor Statistics, an Associate’s degree holder earns $7,050 more per year than a high school graduate and a Bachelor’s degree holder earns $13,550 more than the Associate’s degree holder. There are certain habits that lead to success at an online college and they include:

The List

  1. Checking E-mails and Course Pages – What differentiates an online college from a traditional one is the lack of a physical space for instruction. This means that you will not be able to see your professors and classmates in person and learn about deadlines and exams coming up through word of mouth. This can be difficult, but the simplest way to avoid missing assignments or material is to check your e-mail and the course pages to find out what you need to do. Staying on top of these things means you will turn in assignments on time and be ready for classes.
  2. Meeting Deadlines – While checking your E-mail and the course websites allows you to learn the deadlines for completing assignments, it is another thing to actually follow through with these deadlines. Just remembering when something is due is not enough; you need to own up to your responsibilities and actually hand work in on time to avoid losing points for impractical reasons.
  3. Making Schedules – You have to meet your deadlines, but how? It is necessary to have a calculated approach to meeting deadlines that becomes a routine and therefore second nature. Create a schedule using a calendar that is placed in an often seen location. Mark deadlines for assignments in the calendar and check it daily. In addition to the deadlines, mark times when you will work on each specific assignment prior to the deadline and adhere to this schedule. By sticking to the schedule, you ensure that the work will be done on time.
  4. Studying Often – Simply completing assignments is not enough to earn high grades in most classes. Almost all courses have exams and it is important to do well on these exams to earn a high grade point average. On the schedule you make, mark off when you have exams and times when you will study for them. A good rule of thumb to follow regarding the amount of time to spend studying is to spend 3 hours studying for every week of material on the exam.
  5. Relaxing – All of the above habits are key to being a successful online college student but they are wasted if you spend too much time worrying about your education. Once in a while it is important to relax and spend time engaging in activities that are fun for you. These take your mind off of your studies and reduce stress making it easier to resume your studies later.
