Focusing on just getting the certificate or diploma is definitely the wrong approach to any online college program. Whether it is a conventional college or online college, there are always short cuts which may seem appealing especially if you are just interested in getting the degree and not necessarily interested in the experience. I would urge anyone enrolling in an online college to view it as an opportunity to gain a new skill set and improve their knowledge as well as take full advantage of the opportunity.
The courses are laid out in a manner that maximizes the material covered. The online college of your choosing wants to educate you so you are prepared for your chosen field and they can add you to their success stories. A mistake often made by students is to skim through or even skip readings and then look through the material when a project is due. This will take away from your learning experience and will turn your educational journey into just scraping by for a hollow certificate. Do not short change yourself; follow the reading schedule and stay on top of when things are due. The nice thing about an online college is that you do not need to be at a certain place at a certain time but can learn at your own pace. This can also be a down side if you continually procrastinate. Just because you have limited structure from the college does not mean you must study without structure. Create your own study schedule and stick with it.
Make sure you follow the testing requirements. If the syllabus says not to use text books or online resources during exams then don’t. Cheating can be easier when it comes to online colleges but in the end, the only one cheated is you. It may sound corny but think about it, if you cheat, then you really did not learn anything and the college still gets your money. You are less prepared for your chosen work field that may already be competitive and could require an aptitude test.
The best way to have good study habits is to start with good habits. From day one, know the requirements of your syllabus and exams and projects. If you start your online college career by adhering to all requirements and create a solid study schedule for yourself, it will be easier to maintain down the road. Start with a solid foundation and build from there. The amount you learn and grow rests solely on your shoulders when it comes to an online college, don’t get yourself down.
